How To Use Medium To Get Free Traffic
I keep hearing about Medium.com being a means to generate traffic quickly on low competition traffic. That’s great to get your content ranked quickly. I am now wondering how I am going to post something on medium and use it to drive visitors to my site.
Let’s take a closer look:
- Find low competition keywords with high search volume
- Write content to post on medium about those researched keywords
- Send that traffic to my website – then to affiliate offer? Have ads on my site? Get small portion of traffic from article then get a few of them to convert to customers?
As you can see I am still a little confused as to the flow of traffic and the efforts my work takes versus the rewards from it.
I am not sure where to send visitors or how to go about sending them anywhere.
How do I write an article to send visitors to my site then from my site convert them into customers?
What exactly is the flow and how do I get it to work right for me?
It sounds basic enough when the gurus tell you to do it but implementation is a whole other ball game.
Let’s try this again, so I can try and wrap my mind around it.
Find relevant keywords and write content about it. Easy enough. What is the mission and method with this work?
A little deeper – write the content to satisfy the need of the person searching. Put together a give away, on your site, that you send the “searcher” to after they read your content. Collect the email of the visitor and send your offer to promote to them.
Again all that seems easy but what can I do to find the right give away?
How am I going to deliver it?
How am I going to say way to go on getting this information that you were looking for now buy this thing I’m selling!?
How do I make it relevant and helpful?
Also, are there better subjects or instances where this strategy should be implemented and times when it shouldn’t?
I am beginning to see that not all goods and services are able to be marketed the same. Not everything has an obvious free give away to entice future customers to give you their contact info.
Finding a good search term that is relevant to your niche and can be remedied by a simple free give away could be an easy traffic generating method that would be a natural for this Medium.com technique.
And since I am building my own list and finding my own methods AND sharing it with you here is another tip – Go Here to get on my list where I share some of my keyword research with you.
As with all methods there is more than one way to use the data and there are numerous ways to make money with it come back here for more ideas on how to profitably use keywords to drive free traffic to your affiliate offers and make money!
Getting back to Medium.com, how do you use it to drive traffic, that converts, to your website?
Here’s how I am going to use it…
I will target my keyword and get my content about it up and ready to be published on medium. In my content I will link my landing page, where I have an email capture form. I will have a description of a give away I am offering to visitors that will help with their issue that they searched for, giving them a reason to visit my site and get on my mailing list.
I think this may be the real work in affiliate marketing. Finding keywords, building mailing lists, putting together ebooks and building spreadsheets is the easy part, putting them all together to earn you a living is the hard part!

Easy to Rank For Keywords Experiment – Free SEO Traffic and Free Virtual Real Estate
This “trigger Keyword List” from Marcus Campbell + ahrefs reveals lots of low competition keywords that get lots of searches. Some of them have no ad competition and only a few organic rankings when searched with quotes.
Quotes just means the phrase appears on the page not just that it is relevant like searching without using quotes and you get millions of results and some of them are not near what you are searching for.. It is a way to weed out the competition when doing your keyword research.
I am setting up a blogspot or blogger page tonight about one of the terms I recently found.
What I did was plug the “trigger” word – beginner – into my ahrefs keyword tool.
I then filtered for KD under 10 and search volume over 1,000.
Some of the words I searched, in quotes, and came up with under 100 results.
Next I sorted for CPC – Cost Per Click – and had the highest cost first.
Now I am going to use Blogger.com to see if putting up a blog on a free website will get ranked for the targeted keyword term.
I also found a clickbank product to promote on the site.
I made a quick ad to get clicks to the offer.
The term is “beginner in spanish” and it gets around 1000 searches per month and has only 99 competitors when I go to the last listed page in the search results. Google says they only have 99 results even though they list much more when you first type in your search – look up marcus campbell’s time out method for more details.
I put up very minimal content just to see if I can get ranked for the term “beginner in spanish” in google. If I get a ranking it will be confirmation that my keyword research is paying off. I may do a few more of these if there is any interest, even if it is just mine!
I will target a new word and create content on a free site every day. If I put it on this blog and put a link here it will give it some juice but it is not the best backlink strategy and may actually hurt me so I will think about that one for a bit.
You can see the timestamp on this post and you can search the term I mentioned and see if my blogspot post is ranking or not.
The very worse thing that can happen is I get some practice creating ads and doing keyword research. If I can get this down and find better products to promote I will be headed to a good place.
The downside to this method I am implementing now is that I do not own the blogger platform. If they decide to change something that affects my rankings there is nothing I can do to adjust for it.
The experiment is to see how difficult it is to rank for these low competition search terms and to see if I can actually get traffic. Once I get traffic I can work on conversions.

Make Money Online Scams
Many people have gone to the internet and started making money selling different products and services. Many others have started selling that dream to others! There are legitimate ways to make a great living online, just ask Jeff Bezos!
Many folks get all caught up in the fantasy that you can just get an affiliate link and put it on your facebook page and you’ll get rich by tomorrow morning, unless you did it wrong then it will take til tomorrow afternoon.
Then you get the idea in your head that there are sites to pay you hordes of easy cash just for visiting and telling them how you feel. There are survey sites that will make you rich if you just spend all your time plus a little more giving your opinion of the products or services they are promoting.
You could also get paid to build an email customer list that will “Print Cash On Demand” when you send out an email to that list, on autopilot, whenever you want!
While there may be some legitimacy to these claims they are certainly exaggerated. You can post a link to an affiliate product, or at least a link to your website, and have those people see an offer you are promoting and potentially make some money. It has to be done in a helpful way and it will most likely take many links added in many places consistently that all strategically promote your offer.
It is also possible to “guest blog” and have a link to your site or affiliate product that, also if applied strategically, deliberately and consistently, may generate traffic and sales to your offers allowing you to get paid for your opinion on someone else’s website. They don’t always pay you but the traffic might.
The idea of building a mailing list of hungry customers excitedly awaiting your offers is also viable if done properly. It takes lots of preparation, study, consistency and applied knowledge. There are more tasks to accomplish aside from “copy and paste” email swipes into your autoresponder and spam your list multiple times each day.
There are courses for each of these tasks and all of them can be implemented to make money online. The hard part is to cut through all the hype and find out what it really takes to be successful with these methods.
When you are just starting out and your are either desperate to make some fast cash or you are young and buy in to the easy street methods that these marketers use against you to suck you in to buying their incomplete systems.
The scam isn’t that their methods are invalid its that they lead you to believe that their course is the be all end all system that requires almost no work or maintenance to generate a large income stream for you, some will even do it all for you!
You have to ask yourself why would someone set up a whole income stream for me and let me sit back and profit indefinitely from it while they must continue to toil away all the days selling the same plan to others and doing all the work over and over again. It doesn’t make sense that they have the answer to generate easy money and they are compelled to do the work for you because they love to teach and help others succeed.
The moral is don’t be fooled by false promises that are too good to be true but look for the benefit they are really offering and see how you can use it to your benefit.
I recently got this idea that the reason a business owner or a successful CEO, Company President or the person who comes up with the plan to make money makes so much money is because it is a difficult task to coordinate all the parts of the system to make it run smoothly and get everyone their piece of the pie. It is a headache!
There are many scams because it seems easy to cut corners but when you start going the down scam path you find it is even harder because you still have to make sure all the pieces are working but you also have to hide yourself so you don’t get caught. It is difficult enough to do business online in a helpful, honest and profitable way so avoid falling for the scams and don’t be the scammer!
If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
Keyword Research Experiment Begins
I found some highly searched keywords that have a low competition in the Forex Market. The word I found is “unruggable” and it gets over 500k searches per month and has an Ahrefs keyword difficulty score of 0 making appear to be easy to rank for.
The keyword research I did showed that both broad and phrase match google search results brought back only a few sites targeting this search term. I made a post about it on my ForexWizard.org website with very minimal content, as an experiment to see if I get any traffic.
If I am correct, I should be able to at least rank in the top 100 sites targeting this keyword phrase. I am going to continue to do keyword research to find other niches that have easy keywords that I can rank for. The easy words with search volume will get content written about them or a video made about it to see if the target keywords will actually bring traffic to my websites.
My sites I already have are getting the first of the content and as I find more easy traffic I will also experiment in free websites and social media to get the traffic and then I will focus on selling to the market.
I know the gurus say to know how you’re going to get paid before you waste your efforts on activities that don’t put money in your bank account but driving traffic to a website without having to spend money is a good skill to have. I can make money with that skill!
Looking For A Victory
I searched up some of the keyword terms, on Google.com, I had content made for on one of my niche sites and didn’t find my site in the first 100 results. I don’t know if google has something blocking my own stuff from showing up for me or not but I checked Bing and Duckduckgo and did find my site ranking below 100 for the same terms.
I am not getting tons of traffic or any sales from the traffic but I am getting ranked in some search engines and I am not paying to get ranked.
I have been trying to do the whole process of putting up a new site, on an expired domain that already has keywords ranking, and targeting low competition words with high number of searches and having them get ranked and sending me traffic that is hungry for my offers. It isn’t easy and it isn’t going as planned.
I have decided to focus on getting my content ranked for keywords that get lots of searches and have low competition. Once I can get traffic regularly coming to my site, without relying on PPC that I have had no luck with either, then I can start phase 2 which is to start offering affiliate products to the visitors.
Since no one is reading my stuff or downloading my keyword reports that I release I will continue to show my research and tell you what I am targeting, how I am targeting it and what results I am getting.
This post is inspired by my research for profitable keywords regarding the Forex market that I have a niche site being worked on to target that market. I had it before I started following a plan so I have content on the site. It is an expired domain I picked up and it has backlinks but no ranking keywords. The backlinks are not even good. They are mostly spam or stuff trying to sell the domain from before it was mine.
Now I am tasked with finding profitable niche terms to drive targeted traffic to my site and convert them into customers of products that I get a commission for selling. There is also the option of putting Adsense on the site in which case my strategy of just driving traffic should be enough since many of the terms are competitive or will be triggering the competitive ads from forex advertisers.
I have a word document open now and I’m taking notes from a course I have that details how to do keyword research to find the right keywords to promote affiliate products for profit. I am trying to rank and profit and I don’t even know how to write very well yet. I have lots of work to do and I have lots to learn before I can be the guy to go to for info. I will be able to put content up that generates traffic though. I will find out what it takes to get visitors to my site and then I will figure out how to make money from them.
I have to document what I’m doing and even that turns into an ordeal for me. I have to research how to make a pdf an dthen figure out if I upload it to this site as content that may even get ranked or if I find a way to put it in an unlisted, private spot and release it to subscribers to an email list, or BOTH!
Like I stated earlier, I will report to my readership what I am having success with and what I am failing in.
I have some realizations from old stuff I was doing and I have a better understanding of how to do what I want which is to rank on the first page of google for a keyword search term.
Be on the look out for my progress.
Quick Update – What Do I Do Now?
I finally realized a crucial difference in the way to go about selling different products and services online. There are certain things that sell better when approached a certain way. It goes along the same lines as finding a market and providing them with what they want or need.
You have to find a way to let people know about a product or service that solves a problem they are having or will have if they are going down a certain path. You find them by researching what they are searching for online. When you find the market you have to find a way to tell them about the product or service you’ve found, how it has helped you and how it will benefit them and get them to buy it from your referral so you get paid.
It sounds and is simple but it is DEFINITELY not easy for me. I have mentioned that I found a youtuber that does a good job explaining the how to make money online market to me. Marcus Campbell. He does a good job of explaining how to find and how to market to specific niches. He also talks about marketing ethically.
He talks about how we’ve all been marketed to by less than ethical salesmen. He talks about how that perception we have of “seedy” salesmen make us feel like sales is a subject for sleezy scum bucket sales people and makes us want to not be salesmen.
We do feel inclined to let folks know when we find something helpful and useful though and we feel no guilt or shame but feel useful for sharing the info about a good product and those who take our advice find it helpful too.
As I learn how to be the kind of salesman who helps people find what they are looking for and continue to find ways to bring the products to those searching for them in a way that brings me profit I will share the mentors I find who are helping me. That’s why I mention Marcus Campbell.
Marcus does have a few different products that he offers to the public and they are in the make money online niche. He even has an offer that we can promote through Clickbank. I am a customer of his and I believe he is the real deal. I am not selling or promoting his products yet because he says that’s his job and I am not profitable from following his advice yet.
He has helped me see the different ways to go about marketing different products in a way that works for the offer. There are different types of landing pages that have different uses depending on the product, market and your own style.
Some markets require you to set up a landing page that collects names and emails for a list of leads that you can market to over and over. Other markets require a more one and done type of approach. They are both viable and both have a specific time and place for their use.
I had been struggling with the concept of buying traffic to send to another sales page of a product I am promoting when I could instead use a different approach where I target keywords related to the product I am promoting and solve the immediate problem on the landing page I create, with an article or free download and I get their name and email for the free gift that solves their problem.
Once I have their name and email I send them info about the market and how I am dealing with a problem and offer a product that helped me.
I hope my vagueness can be understood and stretched to a situation you’ve experienced before. Being exact in the how to make money online market is not cut and dry. It is not exact. If it were easy then everyone would be doing it!
That easy button I’ve spent years looking for instead of building continues to elude me. I haven’t used my knowledge to make me better I’ve just searched for the next best thing and it still hasn’t made anything better.
Now that I understand that part of the process is to find the right way to market each product I have a better idea on how to use my knowledge to make money online.
A few posts ago I mentioned that I do have tools and skills in certain areas of online marketing but I don’t have the knowledge, shill or time to do everything myself. I have to hire people to do certain things for me. I can focus on doing some things and outsource other things and then I have the plan to put all the work together in a profitable way.
I do have decent skill in SnagIt, Aweber, WordPress and HostGator.
When I say skills I mean technical. I do not have the skill, yet, to develop an email autoresponder that sells on autopilot or a way to get the computer to spit money at me because I know how to put a wordpress blog on a domain hosted by hostgator but I can build a blog and set up a lead capture page. I just don’t have the savvy to put it all together in a profitable way for me, yet!
I also have the ability to find low competition keywords that also have high search volume. I know that is the target to create content for traffic to your website. I have seen the videos from Marcus on how to use that info and organize the pieces in a way to lead some dollars into your bank account.
I have to find the path to use what I know and have the money too. I see where the money is I see my tools and I am being made aware of the work that nee4ds to be done to join the pieces profitably for me. Now to try stuff and see what is going to be the best way for me to share my skills and knowledge to put money in my pockets.
Home Business
Having your own home based business is the dream for many of us. Get up for that 45 second commute from bed to office. Take breaks when you want. Have home made, hot and fresh lunch everyday! Work at your leisure…
Then, reality sets in. You have to make sure EVERYTHING gets done. You have to do it or it doesn’t get done. It’s all your fault and responsibility.
Niche Finding Research
Steps to Uncover Your First, or Next Profitable Niche
I found a list of trigger words from a guy named Marcus Campbell that I am going to use to start my keyword research.
- I am choosing the trigger word “Help” which I am plugging into my ahrefs keyword research tool.
- Clicking view all I notice over 5 million keywords related to help!
- Setting keyword difficulty to 3 or less Google sheets spreadsheet 50 words free – GET IT HERE
- Look for Niche Ideas – mine are noted on spreadsheet above.
- Look for related domains
For the domains:
I am using spamzilla and Godaddy auctions to find potential sites for the niche I am targeting. There is still more keyword research to do to find more terms that relate to the same niche that can drive traffic to the products I choose to promote.
For free traffic I need more research on what’s ranking in the search engines now for one of the niche keywords I chose. Part of me is feeling like there is more to this that I need to do before moving forward. But this is just a preliminary list. The report has over 16,000 keywords in total. I just took the first page of the results sorted by volume of searches per month. I found a few niches there. I am looking at the tums/antacid searches. I think there is a niche market there that I can target.
I will do more deep diving in the niche to find even more words that have intent to buy the same sort of product. I will use those words to send traffic to an offer page, preferably on my own website but for this experiment I am going to use a site like weebly.com to host my landing page. This market is probably going to need dieting tips or medical advice. There are ways to help this market by showing them ways to fix their problems. They may even be candidates for gardening products or info books.
Do you see how the choices can slow you down?
Even though all this can be done by you wouldn’t it be easier to just put together a team of people you go to for each part of this process to have it done for you?
This sort of activity is a way to help the economy. You hire people to do things for you and you pay them fairly. You use your skills to add value by placing the information in front of the people that are looking for it and offer them a related product to help them out and you get paid for solving their problem.
There are so many steps to each part of this business that one person would be overwhelmed if doing it all alone.
In my next update I will show you my weebly site and discuss how I plan to use other free sites to post more of my content for free and have that content drive traffic to my weebly site.
In order to help me give you the most relevant and helpful information about my experiments or about what I do as an affiliate marketer please ask any questions in the comments below.
Blinded By Choices
I know what I need to do but I am stuck on a different part of the process and I get analysis paralysis. I need to find a niche market first. I jumped the gun on a few domain purchases and just thought I was going to make an easy profit.
I get ideas from youtube videos and I go over in my head a whole bunch of them and I get stuck on the next steps and I get frustrated and move on to something I think I can do instead of figuring out a way through, over or around the obstacle I end up starting over a whole bunch.
Then I waste a bunch of time trying to get a plan together and I get started on something I can do and if it doesn’t give me immediate success I feel like I have to start again. Why am I talking about all this?
I am fighting through the analysis paralysis and morphing my ideas into a working plan. I have generated an offer and I put together a way for the transaction to take place. I priced it low to attract attention since I haven’t generated any success stories yet. In my mind this is more like a partnership that I need to conduct more experiments.
I do the work and order work to be done. I put all the work together in a way to make everyone involved money. I pay for the domain, keyword research tools, website building tools and relevant traffic generating content and you pay for me to put it all together to make you money.
There are ways to use free web properties and resources to generate a profit. I can always go to those and do my experiments. I want to go out and find a hungry audience, find a product to feed them and build a website to deliver it to them.
Here’s another time where I am contemplating how to segue to the part that makes me money. I am not making a decision because I have so many ideas and and I can’t decide how I want to continue.
Do I want to put an offer here or do I send you to another page?
Do I put a text link or a graphic, like a banner?
Do I publish this page then come back and link to my new page or do should I be working backward, sending my readers to my old works? I mean should I have my offer ready to go and then write up this content and send you to my offer?
These are the types of things that I am dealing with constantly. I don’t think I have ADD but I can imagine how much of a struggle it would be if every decision was this complicated by your subconscious mind.
Since I don’t have a page set up yet and I don’t have the details worked out I will just go through my idea and also discuss my keyword research and how it can benefit you.
I have previously written about Marcus Campbell who I found on Youtube, and I am able to grasp the concepts when he talks about them. He gives me so many ideas and he also give good action plans to get things going. I recently watched him outline how to make money using free websites. I have to use the same keyword research I’d normally use to find a niche and for articles.
My new product will have to do with that. I will write out the sites I am going to use, the way I’m going to tie them together for maximum profitability and how I’m doing market research too. When I think these things up I get my mind all clouded up because I am thinking about how I’m going to write a guide or if I should give away some of the keyword lists I’m using to look for good profitable niches to get into.
While going through keywords for my forex site I realized how difficult it is to go out and find a profitable niche that I have an idea of how to use my knowledge and skills to do what it takes to build a cashflow machine out of. I also want to showcase my ability to do the research necessary to find profitable keywords for my customers and for myself. I also want to help out those who may not have the resources to hire others to do the work for them yet but are ready to learn.
That leads to my next project and the product needs a give away. I am going to be researching and there may be things I find but don’t have the time for. Also, there aren’t tons of people getting this material yet either. That means this is fresh now and as I try stuff out and it starts working right for me I won’t have much extra competition from my readers because I will already be working on something else, niche-wise.
I want to find a domain for you. To do that I need a niche to target so I have an idea on what to call the website. That means I have to do some keyword research first. I believe I will be able to find plenty of these niches and I will share some of them to show proof of what I can do in order to build trust.
Once I do a few of these for free web site properties like blogger or weebly.com I will put my offer up for me buying the domain and doing the keyword research. I will also be able to compile my free site research into a small pdf report that I can give away to new visitors to my site that may be interested in my services. It is a record of my successes and an example of what to expect from my research if you purchase a domain and research product from me.
Now, I have just outlined a process that I am going to go and do. Here’s another look at what is going to happen here:
- I am going to do some niche finding research
- I will compile that research into some spreadsheets for my readers to download for free
- I will then set up some free web properties with content meant to sell to the niche I researched
- I will compile that into the ebook/pdf with the spreadsheets as a free giveaway for new email subscribers
- I am putting together a sales page to offer my service of finding you a niche and a relevant domain to use to to market to the niche
Keep an eye out for my Niche Finding Post that I am going to work on now since I just wrote it in my list of what I am going to do.
